I have recently stopped watching CNBC every morning as I had done every morning for the last fifteen years. I just can’t take any more of the news about the state of the economy.
The Library is a good barometer of the direction of the economy.
Our business is booming. When the nation faces tough economic times, our public libraries become part of the safety net for individuals and families needing help to get through.
The library is a place of inexpensive educational and entertainment alternatives. Because of this, our use is up 20% over the last two years.
However, the other issue facing libraries in tough economic times is that they find themselves on the brink of large budget cuts, making it tough to keep our services going.
We could be facing up to a 50% cut in our funding from the state in the coming year. This cut will force the library to drastically cut back on services to the public, reduce our hours and decimate our ability to buy books and DVD’s. It is such a shame at a time when the community needs us the most.
If you have an opportunity to contact your legislators and tell them how much the library means to you and your family and how important level funding for the library is in this time of such great need, it could help to reduce that cut and keep our libraries open next year.
